In 2020, both Europe and the world overall faced a significant economic downturn (4-5%). However, some countries, such as China, are demonstrating economic growth.
According to various forecasts, great structural changes can be expected, and further growth of unemployment is expected too. Some industries have faced greater slowdown than others: airlines, tourism, the leisure industry in general; mining, car manufacturing, etc. The consequences of the pandemic overlapped with the general crisis of the socio-economic system expressed in the weakness of the political sub-system, problems in the financial sub-system such as stock market bubbles, increasing government debt in many countries, and societal tensions.
The major structural changes expected as a result of the economic crisis will open new opportunities for a range of industries concerned with the platform economy and digitalization, such as online trade. In the current conditions, the need to foresee new challenges and opportunities is becoming increasingly important.
In this light, RISEBA University of Applied Sciences is announcing a call for submissions to an international scientific conference that seeks to gather and discuss the latest research findings and insights in order to find actionable solutions to the current socio-economic situation. The conference will trigger a constructive debate among academia, business and government about ways of tackling the crisis. The conference will take place from 1 until 2 June 2021 in Riga (Latvia).
